Barron’s, hardly a hotbed of leftist sentiment, makes the argument that it is time to consider impeaching President Bush:
Willful disregard of a law is potentially an impeachable offense. It is at least as impeachable as having a sexual escapade under the Oval Office desk and lying about it later. The members of the House Judiciary Committee who staged the impeachment of President Clinton ought to be as outraged at this situation. They ought to investigate it, consider it carefully and report either a bill that would change the wiretap laws to suit the president or a bill of impeachment.
History will remember these days as some of the darkest in the Republic. Civil liberties, once given back to the government, do not just come back. We need to be vigilant in our defense of our rights, and refuse to allow tyrants to take them away from us. Justifying the stripping of rights because of a state of emergency is nothing more than the same lie used by Hitler, Mussolini, McCarthy, and Nixon.
We must not be complacent about our rights. If Bush refuses to follow the laws of this nation, we have an obligation to remove him from office.
