I am talking with my students this week about the rise of “big business” and was looking for examples to illustrate trust, holding company and pooling behavior and ran into some interesting sites about media ownership. This certainly not a new topic and I know that some companies, like TimeWarnerAOLPlus100Others, are starting to break apart as deal with the practicalities of being a megacorporation.
The Media Channel has a well-done, albeit dated, chart on the rise of media concentration describing the extend of the mega corporations. Global Issues has this extraordinary background discussion on media concentration and the implications of this trend.
As my students discussed today, the Internet could certainly influence this trend (in either direction). I wonder if this is encouraging the explosion of blog-related media. Are blogs an answer?
