Don Feder, who is listed (unsurprisingly) as a former writer for the Boston Herald, has developed a list of the top 10 conservative movies of 2005. Brokeback Mountain did not make the list, or theaters in Utah. I was amazed to learn that there were that many conservative films—after all, Hollywood is the bastion of the liberal elite who run this country, isn’t it?

Topping the list is “Cinderella Man”, listed for its portrayal of Jame Braddock’s metaphoric representation of America’s fight against the Great Depression. I wonder if Feder missed the parts of the film where companies cheated their workers, electric utilities turned off the power of the poor, or where fatcats managed to escape the worst of the Depression. Oh wait, that was probably what made it a conservative film.

King Kong at #2. Why? “On a deeper level, its characters exemplify feminine virtue, masculine heroism and romantic love.” Ah yes, tired stereotypes about gender roles—conservatism in action. I bet Mr. Feder would enjoy these (and other) films more if he could view them in terms of art, not imagined politics.
