Baucus the Bold is Back!

After somewhat suprisingly (to me, at least) announcing his opposition to the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, Max Baucus came back to his comfortable center-right positioning today, announcing that he isn’t sure what he thinks about the NSA domestic spying scandal. According the the Billings Gazette today:

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said he will wait until Congress holds hearings on the domestic spying program to decide if Bush did anything wrong.

Before someone makes the argument that this position shows Max’s thoughtful deliberation on the issue, you’ll have to convince me. His record in recent election cycles demonstrates that he a lot more concerned with appeasing the Right than a longterm Democratic Senator ought to be. Instread of hedging his bets, Baucus should join the chorus of voices who are demanding an investigation to stop these abuses now–not when Congress gets around to it.
