Just When the IR "Editorial" Page Couldn’t Get Worse

Hard-hitting journalism from the IR’s editor’s today in their 230 opus, “Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down”:

Thumbs down to pettiness associated with the recent Burns-Tester debate in Butte. In a clumsy bit of competitiveness, a business helping to sponsor the debate packed a block of the most desirable front seats with Burns supporters. Then the Tester’s campaign called the action illegal and filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission. Shall we all grow up?

It’s not too late for you to act like journalists.

The Independent Record will post as many comments as possible unless they are defamotary, in poor taste, contain significant inaccuracies.

Thumbs down to a weekly opinion writer, who can’t be bothered to report that Corporations are not allowed to make contributions to specific candidates in elections. Honestly, do some research and find out for yourself. Be a journalist, its not to late to understand the requirements and obligations that go with your job.

Let’s see if they allow that comment.

    2. cece Says:

Shiver me timbers, they actually allowed it. Amazing.

    3. cece Says:

Nope, they took it down. I shouldn’t be suprised.

Dear lord, I hate the IR.

As bad as the newspapers elsewhere in the state might be, they can’t be as blatantly right-wing and dimwitted as our weekly paper here in Dillon. Complaining about anti-Republican letters to the editor, some by me, our editor wrote last week:

“You only have to read the letters to the editor in this paper to realize the level of hate in these campaigns has escalated to unbearable levels. That holds true for politicians that aren’t even running for office. It’s a free country and everybody has the right to their own opinion, but President Bush is the leader of the United States of America. I can understand people having opposing views, but the tone is so venemous, it is embarrassing. Radical slander straight from extreme web pages is passed on as if it is gospel fact. Gee, I think CNN would run that stuff if it were true. Disrespect is the name of the game.”

I love the line about CNN being the arbiter of truth.

By the way, the same editor is perfectly all right with local right-wingers accusing us war critics, by name, of being anti-American.

    6. Turner Says:

Oops, I misquoted our illustrious editor slightly. He wrote, “CNN would run that stuff 24/7 is it were true.” I left out the 24/7.

Wow…that is some quality thinking there, in the Dillon paper. :)

My complaint with the IR is actually less about bias and more about just being lazy. Jason and I have joked before that while the editorials in the Missoulian are crazy, at least someone is trying.

What passes for editorial content in the IR doesn’t leave much room for discussion.

Puppies, rainbows, and world peace? Thumbs up!
Cancer, war, and parking woes? Thumbs down!
