Interesting profile of Brian Schweitzer in the New York Times magazine this week. Overall, definitely a positive piece about Schweitzer in particular, and Western Democrats in general, but one section gave me pause:
Schweitzer remains an iconoclast; he says he supported John McCain’s presidential bid in 2000, though he has since soured on McCain because of the way he has courted the religious right, and he says he is now intrigued by the possibility of a presidential run by Mitt Romney, the Republican governor of Massachusetts, in 2008. “If he gets the nomination, I might support him,” Schweitzer told me.
I know that Schweitzer wants to cultivate an image of independence, and I can forgive the support for McCain, as a lot of people I respect were taken in by his media-created independent image, but Mitt Romney?

Mitt Romney has my vote. I haven’t come across one candidate that has his polish, ability to articulate issues important to me, integrity, and executive capacity.
Who else in the GOP has taken a state from a 3 billion dollar budget deficit to a hundred million dollar surplus in less than 4 short years - without raising taxes?
Who else in the GOP has come up with a way to get every person in their home state health coverage, without rasing taxes or expanding government - that is acceptable to a democratic legislature, and acceptable to the heritage foundation?
It is safe to say that the more Americans learn about Mitt Romney, the more Americans will like Mitt Romney. That goes for all sorts of constituencies. There is too much to like about this guy.

Mitt Romney? You gotta be kidding me. Integrity? This is the man who has flipped on every issue that’s come before him — first taking one position to win the gubernatorial race, then to campaign for President.
People in Massachusetts despise him, b/c he’s screwed over the state. Yes, the state budget has been cut, but all of the burden for schools, roads, and libraries has fallen on the towns, which have had to raise property taxes and cut needed program.
You want to know why Deval Patrick has a 40-point lead over lt. gov, Kerry Healey? Mitt Romney.

Well, we can see from above that Romney has some net activists!
He also does have a bit of the blow-dried smarminess to him. Agreed, his inconsistent issue positions will not help him, nor will his Mormon-faith appeal to southern Christian conservatives.
Romney couldn’t carry MA, either so that’s another fantasy.
