In a Congressional race in which one candidate plans to run on the strength of his Project Vote Smart test results and some camping trips, it’s hard to find a great deal of information. It’s especially hard to find information on Dennis Rehberg, who seems to lack the courage of his convictions, at least as far as Project Vote Smart goes.
On a wide array of questions about spending, budgets, and taxes, Rehberg’s only response was that he has “a strong record of prioritizing spending and providing tax relief to Montana families.” Especially families making over $250,000 annually. No sense of where he stands on the estate tax, balanced budgets, military spending, law enforcement.
What does Rehberg believe about campaign finance? That all contributions should be disclosed. Wow, certainly a bold stance there, since it’s mandated by federal law.
Perhaps least surprisingly, since Kazakhstan wasn’t mentioned, Rehberg took no stand on any international issues, whether it be the Iraq War or Darfur. He didn’t even agree that the U.S. should lead the push for peace in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Who doesn’t believe that?
The final question provides the best look at why Rehberg has failed as a Congressman. It simultaneously asks for his top legislative priorities and a reason for anyone to vote for him:

Since Rehberg is essentially a shoe-in for a another term as Montana’s “representative,” you’d think he’d have some courage and actually take a stand, let his constituents know where he is on issues. If we don’t really have a choice in this race, why not at least let us know what we’re stuck with?
I suspect that, for a good deal of it, he just didn’t have any answers. Does anyone really believe that Denny Rehberg has any idea what the U.S. government should do to help the people of Zimbabwe?
I’d lay even money that he’s never heard of the place.
