What Really Terrifies Me About Montana’s Right Wing Bloggers

in '08 Election, Blogs

There are a lot of things that terrify me about them, but I just realized something today that might be the worst of all. I think they actually believe that arguments like the Republican stunt in Washington is lowering gas prices or that the Democrats in Congress have caused gas prices to increase by not allowing drilling offshore in the last two years are true.

I’m not even really trying to be an ass, here. I’m just amazed that there are people who so unquestioningly swallow this political tripe that’s purely designed to score political points in our sound bite culture. They accept it so unquestioningly that they repeat it, jeopardizing the credibility of their online pseudonyms.

Wouldn’t it be great if the right wing blogs did more than parrot Rush Limbaugh’s version of truth?

On another note, this is my favorite post from the Republican side of the Montana’s ‘sphere this week. Presented as “Support from Around Missoula” for the claim that Congress’s recess is causing the energy crisis, offer five videos of average citizens.

Just a thought, guys…you might be a bit more credible if four of them weren’t standing in front of the GOP booth at the fair, and the fifth didn’t indicate she was a friend of the poster, the President of the UM College Republicans.

Keep the stunts up. You guys are AWESOME at them.

Pogie, Obama explained these Right Wingers in the post preceding this one: ‘it’s like they take pride in being ignorant’.

I certainly couldn’t say it any better.

Andy B. Hammond August 6, 2008 at 12:29 pm

What terrifies me is your misrepresentation of my thinking the #dontgo activities in Washington are causing the price of oil to go down. If you read any of my posts on oil, I always state the free market (supply and demand) causes the price of oil to rise and fall.

But you have a point to make and the truth has no place in it for you.

John Young August 6, 2008 at 12:43 pm

Oil is not in a free market. A cartel controls 80s percent of the supply and sets the price. It’s OPEC’s game. OPEC members also fund our enemies with our money and pay blackmail that supports Wahabbism. In 1980, OPEC dropped the price of oil to stop the development of alternatives and they’re doing the same thing right now. They’ll also drop their oil production to compensate for any new U.S. production because that’s what price-fixing is all about.

Pogie August 6, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Ah, yes, the free market.

At what level of federal subsidy for oil companies would you say the free market still works? Given the billions of dollars of federal expenditure to benefit oil companies, what part of the oil industry is a “free market”?

Wulfgar August 6, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Pogie, thank you for getting to Andy’s share of idiocy. I didn’t have room for it in my last post.

What is truly astounding to me is that Andy can pop in here, while presumably keeping a straight face, and hold up the “free market” as if it is a cross or garlic against the terrifying liberals. And all the while, he celebrates the worst example of Big Government cronyism demonstrated in quite some time. The “#dontgo” effort is predicated on the idea that Gubmint needs to solve the problems, and Andy cheers for that while claiming that Gubmint interference is the problem. deb is correct in pointing out that Obama is right: They take pride in being ignorant. I would add, they can’t cope without being remarkable hypocrites.

Reaz August 6, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Wulfgar actually the whole point is for government to reduce the restrictions on oil drilling therefore freeing up the market. So see it isn’t hypocritical at all. If we open up more areas for drilling we are freeing up the market. This isn’t about government “fixing” the problem as much as government removing obstacles.

Wulfgar August 6, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Reaz, a challenge: prove that the current gas price is due to the limitations of supply of oil, or that more drilling will solve the problem. That should be simple, right?

Montana Headlines August 6, 2008 at 4:17 pm

You terrify easily, don’t you? What most Americans are convinced of is the fact that decades of obstructionism in developing traditional coal, oil, and gas resources (not to mention obstructing the building of nuclear power plants and oil refineries) are directly affecting today’s energy availability and prices. That is common sense that shouldn’t terrify even the most timorous lefty.

As to current actions affecting prices, of course they will, because of the futures market and speculation. If speculators know that supply is going to increase — either from public statements or based on polling data that has been running strongly in favor of increased drilling for weeks — they won’t be bidding high on oil futures, and that will start to have an effect. Foreign producers anticipating future drops in prices will up their production to get oil sold while the prices are good, and prices will drift down.

As far as the videos, give the college kids a break. If you’re manning the Republican booth, you’re going to have plenty of opportunities to talk to people who are interested in the subject at hand.

Not only is it convenient to shoot video where you are already standing, it is good PR for the Republican Party — which College Republicans (shocking as it might be) want to promote.

And it got Steve and Carol’s signs in the background on YouTube — very nice positioning!

Pogie August 6, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Someone care to answer the questions about the free market? Reaz highlights what “free markets” mean to modern Republicans: freedom from restriction by the the government, and the freedom to take handouts. It’s an interesting ideological position, no?

I have no problem with the videos in particular–maybe they just ought not sell them as videos “around Missoula.”

It does terrify me, MH, that people actually believe this Republican stunt is impacting gas prices. It shows just how gullible we have become.

problembear August 6, 2008 at 7:08 pm

overestimating the intelligence of the american public is perilous.
obama must resonate and connect viscerally with average americans to win this election.

the average american trusts no one anymore. he/she are too tired and frankly too disenfranchised to care anything about politics.

ever raise a three year old? you don’t reason with them- you connect on a very visceral level and they respond. fear is what works for republicans most of the time. there are other emotions.

beware the trap of feeling superior because you know more.
politically speaking (not spiritually) knowledge is worthless without power.

goof houlihan August 7, 2008 at 6:55 am

Terrified, eh?

I’m hoping we start drilling, you know, the sooner we start, the sooner we will “come a gusher”. The far left has been fighting off shore drilling for a long time…long enough to bring that oil to market…and we also have plenty of the whack jobs fighting wind power now. A little shredded tweet at the wind farm or chopped fish at the hydro is going to be far preferable to freezing in the dark. I seem to remember the brownouts in California resulting in a pretty startling political process.

“It’s got to get better, it’s GOT to” a man with four kids and no job tells himself in today’s Daily Chronicle. There’s the election in a nutshell. It’s also real, not rhetorical, terror.

Who will reach him? As problembear says, this election will be waged over very basic issues. Neither candidate seems to be getting anywhere near the mark, but the congressional republicans’ “dontgo” is hitting close. There’s a villain, a do nothing Congress whose main achievement has been naming post offices, and a vocal minority action that is at least perceived as sacrificing their golf games and fishing trips to do something about gas prices…and gas prices are going down.

Wulfgar August 7, 2008 at 2:52 pm

Come on, Goof. We all know that you ain’t gonna be “freezing in the dark”. You’re just gonna be paying a little more for American business to offer you the privilege of lights and heat, lowly one. You wanna go to work? Pay up. You want to set your thermostat for 70 F.? Pay up. And lets not forget that the California brown-outs were in part a manufactured crisis to up market utility rates. You’re right about the political consequences, but the economic ones were very clear, and those were the ones that really mattered. Montana has to pay California rates because California sets the market. I know because little Freddy Thomas told me so (no doubts with Racicot’s hand up his ass moving his mouth like a puppet.)

But I don’t miss the implied threat to your comment, and it’s very real. Republicans can and will use this as a wedge with voters. “They tried” will be the mantra. After all, their real agenda isn’t to solve your petty expensive problems. Their agenda is keep people scared and stupid and voting Republican. I will be the first to admit their past success in that endeavor. I do find it surprising that you would carry water for that effort. “Freezing in the dark” indeed.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

My friend wants to read a story I wrote in a video on her Youtube channel. I’m concerned that my story could be stolen by some one, and have them claim it as their own, not that I think it’s really good enough for anyone to want to steal it. How likely do you think it would be that my story would be plagiarized? Is there anything Youtube does to try to stop plagiarism?.
