An Incredibly Sad Day for Butte and the Whole State

by Don Pogreba on December 8, 2008

Representative George Groesbeck, state representative from Butte, passed away Sunday, and he will be missed tremendously.

George was a debater at Carroll College a few years ahead of my time, but I got to know him through association with the team and later when he would volunteer his time as a debate judge at the Butte high school tournament. What always stood out about him were his incredibly positive, hopeful outlook and his commitment to helping those in need, whether through his job or helping teach high school kids with thoughtful, productive comments on a ballot.

I didn’t know Representative Groesbeck as well as I would have liked, but I’ll miss him. His spirit and decency was exactly what the Montana Legislature needed, and his absence will be profoundly felt.

My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
