Concerns about the Montana Meth Project? Don’t worry. The brain trust at the Independent Record thinks the program is great, before it’s even been reviewed:
We remain convinced that the Montana Meth Project is making real inroads against methamphetamine use by convincing young people not to take it “even once.”
As I often note before offering criticism of the Independent Record, I am no journalist. But I did really want to be one in sixth grade, and I remember reading that one of the things journalists do is to investigate. It seems like a journalist who wanted to have credibility on a subject would do more than accept the claims of the Meth Project at face value. It seems like a journalist might know that people whose salaries depend on state funding might have a vested interest in promoting their program.
This isn’t terribly complicated. Look at the actual research, rather than recording PR spin. Spend some time investigating and reporting. In the end, the continued funding of the Montana Meth Project probably isn’t in question, but the credibility of the Montana newspapers who act as their PR agencies probably is.
