Were the Police Called to the Office of the Commissioner of Political Practices?

As I mentioned the other day, one of the elements of the Commissioner of Political Practices1448 story that made the least sense to me was the decision by the Commission staff to call the police on Tuesday afternoon.

After reading press reports about the decision, I’m even more confused, because it seems that Mary Baker told one reporter she did call the police out of fear of “a verbal attack” and another reporter that she didn’t.

From the Helena Independent Record, January 19:

Mary Baker, program supervisor at the office, said office staff called police Tuesday because they felt Gallik left the office in anger and were worried what he would do when he returned.

“You can imagine how tense the office is; we were just concerned about safety,” she said. “I don’t think he would physically harm anyone; we were more concerned about an escalated verbal attack. … I think the tensions were high enough that we were concerned he might be pretty upset.”

From the Great Falls Tribune, January 17:

Program specialist Mary Baker said the staff did not call the police, but called Capitol security to "give them a heads-up."

"We knew he was going to be talking to press people today so we alerted Capitol security there was a potential that he might get upset," Baker said. "We were just nervous and wanted them to know what was going on. We didn’t make a report or anything of that nature."

The most important question is certainly whether or not Mr. Gallik used his office improperly as Commissioner and why the state doesn’t have a better system of oversight in place. There’s no question that the state should have stepped in sooner to investigate the allegations against him.

But details do matter. Everyone involved in this story deserves to have facts that will affect his/her reputation reported correctly.

Given that Independent Record already incorrectly reported that Gallik kept a private and state computer at the Commission office when those computers were actually at his law office, it’s important that the facts be accurately reported.

Facts be damned, my learned amigo! View this incident for what it is, a great victory! A great victory for yellow journalism! It's Murdochian in its scope! When you don't have any news, no shootings, arrests, drug deals, etc., MAKE some news! And influence policy at the same time! It matters not what the crime is in this case, just that it MAKES headlines!

Just WHAT was the great scandal that needed to be outed? That the Four Horseapples of the Apocryphal didn't like their boss? That Gallik,a salaried employee didn't record his time sufficiently to satisfy his underlings? That he worked from home? What was the great flaw in Gallik's character that motivated the silly, snitchy, gossipy Horseapples to go full frontal Murdoch on the poor dude? Well, there WAS none! But that's no matter. You see, just like with Ceasar, Gallik was a serpent's egg! It's not what he did, it's what he MIGHT have done! Therefore, he had to be destroyed!

And thus, the Four Horseapples of the Apocryphal became the Bruti! They STABBED their beloved boss so that his time sheet wouldn't become his fatal flaw that UNDERmined the entire democratic system of governance here in Montana

But I come not to curse the GF Spitoon or the Bruti, but to PRAISE the Spitoon! For you see, the Spitoon is an honorable newspaper! You see, the Spitoon seeks the hardhitting stories, like every time some weirdo in a colonial costume passed gas in front of the civic center. The SPITOON was there! They were ON it, projecting this obscure group of wackos and elevating them to legitimate status FAR beyond their actual influence. Some would call this pisspoor journalism, but I call it MURDOCHIAN journalism! For if you can't FIND any news, send your little adams out to MAKE a scandal! And lest we forget, the Spitoon is an HONORABLE newspaper!

And thus, my dear Pogie, you can sleep safely at night now secure in the knowledge that our democratic way of life will live on as LONG as we have adams and the GF Spitoon watchdogging the time sheets of salaried employees. It's mytical in its proportions when you think about it! It's like the Spitoon's muses are the very Harpies themselves of old! I get all tingly with I think about what COULD have happened if Gallik would have been able to continue to run the office. We dodged a bullet! And for that, we owe adams and the Spitoon a HUGE debt of gratitude! The Four Horseapples of the Apocryphal will now go down in legend along WITH the Harpies of old. And well they should. The DESERVE mythical status!
