Montana Politics Winners and Losers of the Week, May 7

Loser: Equality Under the Law

While I will certainly be voting for Steve Bullock in the general election given that his opponent belongs to a party that wants to criminalize same sex relationships, it was certainly disappointing to see Mr. Bullock stand against marriage equality this week. It’s probably a politically advantageous position, but it’s one that Bullock needs to change. All Montanans—no matter their sexual orientation—deserve equal protection under the law.

Winner: Montana’s Lee Newspapers

Their financial troubles had to have been entirely eliminated today, as Dennis Rehberg bought out what appeared to be the entire site on each paper to run an attack ad against Senator Tester…in June. You’d think the Rehberg team might have something positive to say about their own candidate this early, but it is Dennis Rehberg.

Loser: Ken Miller

It’s two weeks in a row for GOP gubernatorial candidate Ken Miller, who sent out a breathless release this week, informing the media and public that he’s still losing to Rick Hill by 20 points in the GOP primary for governor. Hard to spin 12% support as anything but a loss.

Winner: Forward Montana

Loser: Rasmussen Polling

Known for their Republican bias and accuracy problems, Rasmussen released a poll this week entirely out of line with the political reality of the Tester-Rehberg race. While either candidate could certainly be ahead at this point in the race, Rasmussen proved that its polls shouldn’t even be considered as this race progresses.
