Missoula City Council Member Adam Hertz announced today on his Twitter feed that Major General Paul Vallely will give a keynote speech to to the Five Valleys Pachyderm Club next month. The Pachyderms Club describes themselves as “coordinated closely” with the Republican Central Committee and State Republican Party, and appears to meet every couple of weeks in Missoula.
Retired Major General Vallely is a major get for the Republican group, because he’s a certified birther as well as a paranoid, conspiracy-addled propagandist who has advocated for the overthrow of the American government.
Just how crazy is Vallely? He’s one of the organizers leading a movement of imaginary millions called “Operation American Spring” which plans to overthrow the American government on the model of the Arab Spring:
Its organizers anticipate a violent clash between millions of Americans:
The organizer, Harry Riley, predicts that “millions of Americans will participate” but warns that “patriots may be killed, wounded, incarcerated” and harassed by the government. After successfully overthrowing Obama, the group hopes to install a right-wing tribunal led by the likes of Allen West and Ted Cruz.
“[I]t will be painful, and some people may die because the government will not be non-violent; some of us will end up in a cell, and some may be injured,” writes the organizer. “If that’s what it will take to save our nation, do we have any choice? Freedom loving Americans will say there is no choice, we must begin the second American Revolution.”
An alternative plan involves a citizens arrest of the President:
“I would say if we can make citizens’ arrest,” he [Vallely] continued. “I challenge our government that if we have people that are conducting treason against the United States and the best interests of our country, violating the Constitution, violating our laws, just as they are doing with these excessive executive orders that are coming out of the White House where you have a President and his team that doesn’t care about the Constitution.”
If those don’t work, Vallely envisions a totally constitutional scheme to require Obama to resign:
“First, in most of the world’s so-called ‘democracies’ – actually, multi-party constitutional republics – a formal vote of ‘no confidence’ by the Lower House suspends or greatly limits the governing authority of the party in power and, in a ‘recall’ of sorts, mandates new elections within 30-60 days,” the insider reportedly reasons. “Although we have no such instrument in our Constitution or in existing law, there is nothing to prevent its use as a comprehensive de facto indictment and conviction for contempt of Congress, violations of oath of office and of the Constitution itself – for all of the reasons stated in such a resolution.
In marginally more lucid moments, Vallely has called for the resignations of almost every politician in Washington:
We need to demand the resignation of Obama, [Vice President Joe] Biden, [Republican House Speaker John] Boehner, [Senate Republican Leader Mitch] McConnell, [House Minority Leader Nancy] Pelosi and [Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid. The leadership of both parties needs to step down and new leaders step up.”
Vallely’s not satisfied with calling for the overthrow of the government. He’s a confirmed birther lunatic who believes that President Obama’s birth certificate was a forgery:
Retired Maj. Gen. Paul Vallely, the chief of Stand Up America, a national security expert and Fox News contributor, says the “Certificate of Live Birth” released in April by the White House as “proof positive” of President Obama’s Hawaiian birth is a forgery, but the FBI is covering the fraud and no one in Congress is willing to tackle the situation because of fears of a “black backlash” if the failings of the nation’s first black president are revealed.
“No members of Congress will take this on. The word I get out of Washington is that they don’t want to challenge this because it would be in fact a felony offense and in some cases may be even treasonous and [they are] afraid of a black backlash from some of the urban areas,” Vallely said. Not only that, but he supported a Lt. Colonel in the Army who faced court martial for refusing to fight in Afghanistan:
The most recent endorsement of Lt. Col. Terry Lakin’s claim that no orders issued by the US military are legitimate because President Barack Obama is not a native-born American citizen comes from Maj. Gen. (ret.) Paul Vallely, who stated in a radio interview featured on Friday by the conservative website WorldNetDaily that he believes Lakin has “a valid point.”
“I think many in the military — and many out of the military — question the natural-birth status of Barack Obama,” Vallely remarked. “I’m not convinced that he is [a natural-born citizen].”
While we’re at it, let’s not forget that Vallely was part of the propaganda team working for President Bush to support the failed war in Iraq, even lying to a Fox News audience, claiming the insurgency was going to be defeated in Iraq when his own observations suggested the opposite:
Records and interviews show how the Bush administration has used its control over access and information in an effort to transform the analysts into a kind of media Trojan horse — an instrument intended to shape terrorism coverage from inside the major TV and radio networks…
“I saw immediately in 2003 that things were going south,” General Vallely, one of the Fox analysts on the trip, recalled in an interview with The Times.
The Pentagon, though, need not have worried.
“You can’t believe the progress,” General Vallely told Alan Colmes of Fox News upon his return. He predicted the insurgency would be “down to a few numbers” within months.
That Vallely has the audacity to challenge the legitimacy of the Obama Administration’s governance after cheerleading a war that cost the United States thousands of lives and billions of dollars is a testament to just how disconnected from reality he is—and that the Five Valleys Pachyderm has selected him as a keynote speaker is yet more evidence of the irrationality of a political party once dedicated to some semblance of principle and reason.
I used to honestly believe that there was a sensible core of the Republican Party, people with whom I could have reasonable disagreement about policy and the direction of the United States. In their embrace of people like Vallely and other reactionary crackpots, though, it seems they’ve sold their collective souls for the sake of a few TEA Party votes.
No rational, reasonable, or , dare I say, loyal political group should be inviting someone like Vallely to speak, but perhaps there’s no one reasonable, rational, or loyal left in the Republican Party.
If there are, it’s time for them to speak up. Anyone?
